Your Guide to Seal Swimming's Learn-to-Swim Pathway

At Seal Swimming, we offer a comprehensive, child-centred approach to learning that supports swimmers from their very first splash to confident, lifelong swimming. Our programs are thoughtfully designed to meet each swimmer where they are — whether they're a baby experiencing water for the first time, a school-age swimmer building strong strokes, or a teen or adult learning to swim later in life.

Our learn-to-swim pathway is structured into progressive stages, ensuring every swimmer builds confidence, water safety skills, and strong technique before moving on. With pools across the Greater Toronto Area — including North York, Scarborough, West Scarborough, and Guildwood — we make quality swim teaching accessible and convenient for families throughout the GTA.

Baby Seal — For Infants (2–24 Months)

The Baby Seal program is where every Seal Swimming journey begins. Designed for babies aged 2 to 24 months, this parent-and-child program introduces young swimmers to the water in the most gentle and nurturing way possible.

Parents or caregivers enter the water alongside their child, creating a safe and reassuring environment for early water exploration. Sessions focus on:

  • Water familiarization and comfort building
  • Floating with parental support
  • Basic kicking and arm movements
  • Breath control and submersion introduction
  • Songs and games to make learning fun
  • Water safety awareness for parents

Classes are small (4–6 parent/baby pairs), warm, and run for 30 minutes once or twice per week.

Seal Pups — Building Independence (Ages 2–4)

The Seal Pups program is designed for toddlers aged 2 to 4 years, providing a structured yet playful introduction to foundational swimming skills. These stages focus on building water confidence, basic swimming techniques, and essential safety practices through engaging and interactive activities. Toddlers gain independence and learn to enjoy the aquatic environment under the guidance of skilled swim teachers.

Classes are parent-and-tot format (Pups 3 is parent optional), with 3–4 children per class. Key skills include:

  • Independent water entry and exit
  • Front and back floating
  • Basic kicking techniques
  • Bubble blowing and breath control
  • Reaching and grabbing the pool wall
  • Comfortable submersion and water play

Swim Stars — Progressive Lessons for Children (Ages 3–12)

The Swim Stars program provides a comprehensive and progressive learn-to-swim framework for children aged 3 to 12 years. The curriculum is structured across 9 progressive levels — from complete beginner through to advanced — nurturing each child's ability through fun and engaging activities in a positive, supportive environment.

Levels 1–5 are 30-minute classes with 3 swimmers per swim teacher. Levels 6–9 are 45-minute classes with up to 5 swimmers per swim teacher. Skills covered include:

  • Independent front and back float
  • Elementary and advanced breathing control
  • Freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke development
  • Introduction to butterfly
  • Dives, flip turns, and open turns
  • Endurance swimming and swim lane etiquette

Classes run once or twice per week. Each level builds directly on the last, ensuring swimmers are always challenged at the right level for their development.

Swim Squads — Pre-Competitive Training (Ages 9–17)

Swim Squads is Seal Swimming's original program — specifically designed to bridge the gap between learn-to-swim and competitive swim club training. It is for youth swimmers aged 9 to 17 who are ready to embrace a more rigorous and structured training environment, but without the commitments of a competitive swim club.

Sessions are 60 minutes, run 2–4 times per week, and are capped at 6 swimmers per lane. Training focuses on:

  • All four competitive strokes mastery
  • Start and turn technique refinement
  • Race strategy and pacing
  • Interval training and endurance building
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Competition preparation and meet experience

Whether your child dreams of competitive swimming or simply wants to swim faster and stronger, Swim Squads provides the coaching and environment to make it happen.

Teen and Adult Swim Training (Ages 13+)

Swimming isn't just for kids. Our Teen and Adult Swim Training program welcomes swimmers aged 13 and up of all abilities — from complete beginners who have never been in a pool, to experienced swimmers looking to improve their technique or fitness.

The program includes three stages designed to help teens and adults reach their swimming goals. Teachers work with swimmers individually to determine their goals and design classes accordingly. Sessions are 60 minutes with up to 6 swimmers per class. Skills covered include:

  • Learn-to-swim fundamentals for beginners
  • Freestyle and backstroke technique
  • Breaststroke and butterfly for intermediate swimmers
  • Fitness swimming and lap training
  • Open water swimming preparation
  • Personalized skill development plan

To complete the first level, swimmers should be able to complete a 50-metre swim with no rest and display basic comfort in deep water. To complete the second level, swimmers will be able to perform 100 metres of freestyle in under two minutes.

Private Lessons (Ages 2+)

For swimmers who benefit from individual attention, Seal Swimming also offers Private and Semi-Private Lessons for all ages from 2 years and up. These lessons provide personalized teaching designed to help swimmers progress with confidence, with each lesson tailored to the individual's goals and learning style.

Leadership Programs — Lifeguarding and Swim Teaching

For those who want to take their swimming skills into a professional or leadership context, Seal Swimming offers two certification programs:

Lifeguarding Courses — Open to participants aged 13 and up and prepare candidates for careers in aquatic safety and pool supervision. Courses are delivered through the Lifesaving Society and cover emergency response, CPR-C/AED, water rescue, spinal injury management, preventive lifeguarding, and pool surveillance. Courses run as intensive weekend or weekday sessions with 8–12 participants.

Swim Teacher Courses — Open to participants aged 15 and up and trains aspiring swim teachers in the skills needed to deliver effective swimming lessons across all levels. The Seal Swim Teacher Instructor Certification covers teaching techniques, lesson planning, stroke teaching and skill progression, swimmer assessment, class management, and supervised practical teaching experience. Courses run over approximately 30 hours across multiple days.
