Transitioning Between Levels

How progression is measured through SplashChecks, when a swimmer repeats a level, and how families are notified that a swimmer is ready to advance.

Understanding Your Swimmer's Journey at Seal

At Seal Swimming, every swimmer progresses at their own pace — and that's exactly how it should be. Our goal is to help each swimmer build confidence, competence, and comfort in the water before moving on to the next level. Progress is personal. Some swimmers may advance quickly, while others benefit from more time to reinforce key skills. Not all swimmers will move up each session, and that's not only normal — it's expected.

How Level Progression Works

Each swim level in our program is designed around specific skill outcomes. Swim teachers use ongoing observation and weekly SplashChecks to monitor a swimmer's growth in those areas. When a swimmer demonstrates consistent skill performance, shows confidence and control, and meets the minimum safety and technical benchmarks for the level, they'll be recommended for the next stage. You can read more about the skills covered at each level in our Curriculum Goals and Objectives article.

What Happens if My Swimmer Doesn't Move Up?

Staying in the same level does not mean your swimmer isn't progressing. In fact, repeating a level often means they're building stronger technique, gaining consistency and independence, and boosting stamina and self-assurance. Reinforcement is an essential part of swimming development — and it sets swimmers up for long-term success in higher levels. Many swimmers repeat levels (especially in mid-stages like 4–6) to master skills like stroke timing, breath control, or deep water comfort. This is a normal and healthy part of the learning journey.

How Will I Know When It's Time to Move Up?

You'll see progress in your swimmer's SplashCheck ratings in the Swim Portal. Once they've reached 4–5 stars on all key skills in their level, their swim teacher or a Team Captain may recommend a level transition. We'll notify you in the portal and/or in person, help you find the right class time for their new level, and answer any questions about what's ahead. Not sure how to read your swimmer's ratings? See our Skills Tracking and Reporting guide.

Our Programs and Level Pathways

Level progression applies across our swim programs: Seal Pups — early independence skills for ages 2–4; Swim Stars (3–5) — foundational levels with clear skill milestones; Swim Stars (5–12) — 9-stage progressive pathway toward advanced swimming; Swim Squads — advanced training for swimmers ready for the next challenge; Teens & Adults — goal-based progression for older swimmers. Every Swimmer Grows in Their Own Time
