Curriculum Goals and Objectives

An overview of Seal Swimming's learn-to-swim curriculum — covering water safety, core swimming skills, physical literacy, age-appropriate progressions, inclusion, and the goals behind every level from Baby Seal through to advanced programs.

What We Teach and Why It Matters

At Seal Swimming, our curriculum is more than a list of skills — it's a thoughtfully designed pathway that nurtures confidence, competence, and a lifelong love of swimming. Our goals go beyond swimming laps. We focus on building the physical, social, and emotional skills that every swimmer needs to be safe, skilled, and self-assured in the water.

1. Promote Water Safety First

Safety is the foundation of every lesson. From baby classes to adult beginners, we teach:

  • Breath control and submersion comfort
  • Safe entries and exits
  • Floating and self-rescue techniques
  • Awareness of depth, distance, and water risks
  • Respect for aquatic environments (pools, lakes, beaches)

2. Build Core Swimming Skills

Our curriculum develops essential aquatic competencies, including:

  • Body position and balance in water
  • Kicking and coordinated arm movement
  • Breath timing and stroke rhythm
  • Strokes: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and introduction to elementary strokes
  • Treading water, gliding, and swim-to-survive techniques

Each skill is introduced at the right stage, then refined and reinforced over time.

3. Support Physical Literacy and Confidence

Aligned with the Sport for Life physical literacy model, we promote:

  • Fundamental movement skills (balance, coordination, agility)
  • Confidence in the water across a variety of activities
  • Smooth progression from play-based learning to skill-focused practice
  • Physical fitness through engaging repetition and increasing endurance

We believe confident movers become confident swimmers.

Our Curriculum Is Age-Appropriate and Developmental

Each level is designed with developmental milestones in mind:

  • Baby Seal (2–24 months) — trust, sensory development, and water comfort
  • Seal Pups (2–4 years) — independence, basic movement, and confidence
  • Swim Stars (3–12 years) — structured stroke development and skill refinement across 9 progressive levels
  • Teen and Adult (13+) — tailored to individual goals and learning styles, with a focus on comfort, safety, and personal achievement

We meet each swimmer where they are — no pressure, no comparison, just progress.

Our Curriculum Encourages

  • Goal setting — each level includes specific milestones for swimmers to work toward
  • Progress tracking — swim teachers use consistent evaluation tools and communicate feedback
  • Resilience and self-belief — swimmers are encouraged to try, make mistakes, and try again
  • Leadership and readiness — upper levels support readiness for Swim Squads, lifeguarding, or swim teacher pathways

Inclusion and Accessibility Are Built In

Our curriculum is adaptable for swimmers with special needs, neurodiverse learners, and those learning at a different pace. Swim teachers receive training on:

  • Visual, auditory, and kinesthetic teaching methods
  • Managing sensory needs and communication styles
  • Creating emotionally safe spaces for every swimmer

We believe swimming is for everyone — and our curriculum reflects that.
