Swim Teacher Training, Certification and Background Checks

Learn about Seal Swimming's swim teacher training, certification, and background check processes — including in-water training, Swim Teacher Pro certification, CPR and first aid, criminal record checks, and Vulnerable Sector Screening.

At Seal Swimming, the safety and well-being of our students are paramount. We ensure that our swim teachers are highly qualified, well-trained, and thoroughly vetted before they begin teaching. Here is an overview of the rigorous training, certification, and background check processes our teachers undergo.

Teacher training

Comprehensive training program — Our teachers participate in an extensive training program designed to equip them with the skills necessary to teach swimming effectively and safely. This program includes:

  • Online Learning Hub — Covering topics such as swimming techniques, child development, class management, and teaching strategies.
  • In-water training — Practical sessions where teachers learn to demonstrate and teach various swimming strokes and safety skills.
  • Emergency procedures — Training on how to handle emergencies, including CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques.

Mentorship and shadowing — Assistant teachers undergo a mentorship period where they shadow experienced teachers to observe and learn best practices in the pool setting. This hands-on experience is crucial for building confidence and competence.

Continuous education — To stay updated with the latest advancements in swim teaching and safety protocols, our teachers participate in ongoing professional development. This includes attending workshops, clinics, and additional certification courses.

Certification

The Swim Teacher Pro certification process includes:

  • Swimming proficiency — Demonstrating advanced swimming skills and techniques.
  • Teaching methods — Mastering effective teaching methods tailored to different age groups and skill levels.
  • Teacher observations — Observing and being observed teaching all abilities and age groups.
  • Safety training — Completing courses in Standard First Aid & CPR.

Background checks

Rigorous screening process — To ensure the safety of our students, all teachers and staff undergo a thorough background check process, which includes:

  • Criminal record check — Screening for any criminal history that could pose a risk to students.
  • Vulnerable sector check — Specifically targeting any offences related to working with children and vulnerable populations.
  • Reference checks — Contacting previous employers or professional references to verify the candidate's suitability for working with children.

Regular updates — Background checks are not a one-time procedure. We conduct annual re-checks to ensure that all staff members continue to meet our stringent safety standards throughout their tenure at Seal Swimming.

Commitment to safety and excellence

Safe learning environment — Our rigorous training, certification, and background check processes are designed to create a safe and supportive learning environment. By maintaining high standards for our teachers, we ensure that every student receives the best possible teaching in a secure setting.

Parental peace of mind — We understand that parents need assurance that their children are in safe hands. Our commitment to thorough vetting and ongoing training provides peace of mind, knowing that all Seal Swimming staff are dedicated professionals who prioritise safety and quality teaching.
